How to learn a foreign language in an easy way

You may ask yourself this question "how to learn a foreign language" and find your mind flooded with ideas and things that you have to do but in order to succees you need to be a little organised and focused on your target.

Motivate yourself

Wether you need this language in your new job, you are travelling to another country, your new partner speaks this language or you are just interested in learning a specific language and you want to understand the culture of the folks speaking this language! That is right, language is the door to understand any nation, if you understand their language, you can understand what makes them laugh and what makes them cry. You know how do they think and how sophisticated they are.

No matter what is your reason, you will always need a good motive to get you moving and to help you stay patient. Learning needs patience.

Learn a foreign language: Get involved!

There are many choices when it comen to learning foreign languages. The first option are the usual courses or a special tutor. Those are really helpful and great if you hace the time and the money. These courses can be expensive but if cash is not a problem for you , go for it. It is important to choose a goodplace and to enjoy the process. You may find that there are some persons taking these courses just for fun and with no intend to learn anything at all. Stay away from them! They will come to the lessons just to kill time or get a laugh or even approach a girl.

Another option would be to use a language learning software or an online course. These software will allow you to learn in your own free time, you are not restricted to a specific time table or dates. It also costs you much less than taking courses.

Travelling to the country that speaks the language is of course, the best thing you can do (like in many universities in the world) but what if you can not do this? You need to be "immersed" in an environment filled with this language!

Learn to speak a language naturally and actually USE it!

Practice makes perfect. Wether you choose to take courses or use a software to learn a new language. It is not enough! You need to make this new language a part of your everyday life. Use it every day. Here are some tips to learn a new language in a fast way in addition to taking courses or audio/video lessons online or on a PC:

  • Talk to people who speak this language as their native language. This is great for getting the "sense" of the language and how to use the words and of course for the sake of pronunciation and accent. It is an exercise you need to do often. If you don't know any one (collegues, friends, neighbours) who speak this language, go to chat rooms and find new friends who speak this language!
  • Listen to their songs! This is both fun and educational and also opens your mind to a new type of music.
  • Watch movies in this language! At first, use traslation (subtitles) in your native language then when you become a little more experienced, use subtitles of the SAME language you are learning. Yes, the movie and the subtitles are the same language, this is very useful and effective in learning new languages. Finally, when you feel you can almost understand any one who speaks this language, watch without subtitles (it will be hard in the beginning).
  • Stop being a pessimist! Alot of people may tell you about how hard and awful this language is to learn. Anyway, each language may have its own difficulties; do you think that Chinese, Arabs or Russians find English that easy to learn? Of course not. There are sounds/voices in some languages that are not even present in many other languages.

Each language has its own grammar, that is true. But you will find that many language have some common rules as regards grammar, vocabulary and sentence composition.

So if you want to know how to learn a foreign language, how to speak it, you need to actually practice this. Start discovering this by yourself and don't miss the fun!

Absolutely well done and thankyou for answering my request. You did well with the title and gave a lot of good, practical advice.

Language learning isn't easy as an adult (I'm learning Portuguese - eu estou apprender o portugûes!) and so I know how tough it can be.

Rated up and thanks once again ... muito obrigado!

Fantastic hub, Healthyminds - I adore languages and would love to learn more than just French and German if my college gave me the opporunity! I've always fancied Chinese, although I know that would be a bit of a challenge, to say the least! Thanks for the great tips, Daniella :)

Thanks for the ideas. I've learned German, Spanish, French, Green and Sign Language in College courses but I never felt I got mastery over any of them. My husband and I are now attempting Mandarin on our own without a teacher and using several different courses and ideas--I think I'm actually learning more than I did in a course. I think you are absolutely right about the fact that you can't be a pessimist--you have to make learning that language a lifelong project.

Wow Virginia sorry for the late reply. It is a wonderful spirit you have to try learning many languages. Yes, it can be difficult but once you start practicing (specially with native speakers) things get better. Have you tried to make friends at sites like interpals or italki ?
